Why didn't Medicare pay for my bone mass measurement?

Why didn't Medicare pay for my bone mass measurement? I thought this service was covered?

Medicare covers bone mass measurement for "certain people with Medicare who are at risk for losing bone mass." These people are at risk for losing bone mass:

  • A person who is estrogen-deficient and at clinical risk for osteoporosis, based on her medical history and findings (as determined by the physician or qualified non-physician practitioner), or
  • A person with vertebral abnormalities seen on an x-ray and showing osteoporosis, osteopenia (low bone mass), or vertebral fracture, or
  • A person getting (or expecting to get) glucocorticoid (steroid) therapy that is equal to at least 7.5 mg of prednisone, per day, for more than 3 months, or
  • A person with primary hyperparathyroidism, or
  • A person being monitored to see how well an FDA-approved osteoporosis drug therapy is working.
